How To Outline a Blog Post Like A Pro
The blog post outline that I'm going to share with you will really come in handy IF you have a ton of topics already brainstormed and ready to go. Because we both agree that having a little cursor blink in front of you is annoying AF.
You will find it hard to get started when it's time to put finger to keyboard and share your brilliance with the world. And this is exactly why you need a content calendar filled with topics that you want to touch on. You can learn how to do this as I walk you step-by-step through this process in my course the Content Goldmine.
Let's assume that you have a topic you're ready to start your blog post outline...
An introduction to what your visitor is going to learn in your blog post is how you'll want to start off. Like today you're going to learn how to outline a blog post and at the end I will tell you why you'll want a blog post outline for each and every post.
A couple sentences to let the audience know what is in store for them in the post.
Backstory on Topic
If you can share a story on why you're creating this post, please do. People love stories and if you are writing a post on why you never ever want to upholster a chair in white velvet, please tell them the nightmare that drove you to this conclusion and why it was a mistake.
Mistakes make you relatable, because last time I checked, none of us were walking on water.
Write Down Your Bullet Points
What are the 3, 5, or 7 bullet points that you're going to share about this topic? This is up to you how many bullet points that you choose to share, but make them so that you're completely covering a topic and your post becomes the go-to resource for anyone that wants to know more about the topic of your blog post.
If you're creating a post about how to pick a paint color, your main bullet points will probably be something like:
Find Inspiration
Get Paint Chip Samples
Paint Samples on Wall
Look At Paint Samples Throughout The Day
Estimate And Buy The Paint
Each of those would be an "H2" heading in your post, to break it up and make it easier for your audience to skim through.
Flesh Out The Bullet Points
Underneath each bullet point, create sub-bullet points on what you want to go over for each of those bullet points.
That might look like this for the first bullet point:
Find Inspiration
Spend an hour on Pinterest pinning rooms
Google your favorite hotel or restaurant if you like their look
Pay attention to your favorite shows or movies and see if there's a paint color you adore
The sub-bullet points may or may not be "H3" heading tags, up to you and the kind of blog post you're writing.
The idea is to flesh out your "H2" heading bullet points to completely explain your thoughts.
Write the Content
Once you've got your blog post outlined, you can go begin to write your post.
And I've got two tips for you on this. Don't write your posts on your platform. Write them in a Google Doc so they are automatically saved. The last thing you want to do is spend time writing a post that gets eaten when there's a glitch.
Next tip is that you can actually dictate your post in a Google Doc is typing makes your blog posts staler that week old bread.
Lastly, don't forget to wrap your blog post up with a conclusion where you inspire them to take your advice and take action. Give them a virtual pat of the back and tell them to "go get 'em tiger!"
A Blog Post Outline Is Your Best Friend
By having a blog post outline for each and every post you can stay on topic, make sure that you touch on everything that your reader needs to know and makes your content easily consumable.
There's a lot of editing and changes that can happen when you write a blog post, but know that when you've got your handy dandy blog post outline by your side, you keep on topic and get the right information to your audience each and every time!
