Finding Your Purpose As An Interior Designer

Finding your purpose as an interior designer is hard. You're not selling a coffee table which would make for an easier business. You're selling your creative energy. That's what makes it so hard when you try to figure out what your purpose is. When you're selling your creative energy it can feel icky to monetize it and even confusing.

This gift you have been given just comes so easily to you and it doesn't seem like it should be something you could charge large sums of money. But make no mistake, I know if you're reading this you want to know how to align your creative gift with making money.

You have a gift to share with the world. And you're not a horrible person to get money for your gift. It's an exchange of energy.

Your friends and clients know that you can design a space like nobody's business. These same people who value you and your work will pay you to help them create a space for them.

All the energy that you put into crafting that space takes time. Your time on Earth is limited, so make sure you get compensated for that.

If you want your life's purpose to align with making money, make that happen by coming up with a plan.

Tons of designers start out with the life purpose of creating spaces for everyone. Here's an important note on that... not everyone can afford you. If you want to be the Mother Teresa of design and design for everyone - that will mean you need to devalue yourself to make yourself the designer for the masses.

Does that make sense as a business person? Does that make sense as a creative person? Everyone is not your cup of tea and when you open yourself up to working with everyone (including the ones with no money) will leave you overworked, underpaid and exhausted.

Figure out how much time you have to work on your business, how much you need to charge to meet your income goals, how you'll get there and who you will choose to work with to get there.

You can decide what your life purpose is. Right now. It's a personal decision.

My life's purpose is bigger than being an interior design business coach. I choose to work with interior designers so that I can guide them with their businesses. While making a profit doing that, I can make a better life for my family and bless others in the world. You can choose to see your business as a means to change the world.

Decide what portion of your profits can be donated to a cause you hold dear, because I can bet that you want to make the world a better place by giving back.

The biggest key to all of this is knowing what your gift is (the thing that comes easiest to you), dumping the shit that's a struggle (or not fun) and making your life something you can't wait to wake up to, every.damn.day.
