How To Market Your Interior Design Business

Marketing your interior design business shouldn’t be that hard, but the reason why do many struggle with it is that marketing requires consistency.

There are three easy ways to market your interior design business: content, email marketing, and social media.

While practically everyone and their brother loves to market their business through social media only, they are running the dangerous risk of losing everything.

What?!

I know it does sound a little bit doomsday, but it is true.

Social Media Doesn’t Care About Your Business

No matter what the social media platform is, their number one goal is to keep people on their platform. Not send traffic to you. Unless you want to pay them money to do that.

Whatever audience you have on any social media platform, you’re essentially borrowing the attention of that audience. If you’re lucky enough to get the attention of a percentage of the people there, your number one goal is to get them to go to your website.

We don’t know when Facebook or Instagram is going to go out of business or become passé. And we also know that organic reach has gone down exponentially on those platforms as the algorithms change in the interest of their business, not your business no matter what they want to tell you.

The one platform that I find that still has a lot of potential for interior designers is Pinterest. Pinterest is one of the BEST platforms for interior design and decorating because everyone and their brother is looking for ideas for their home. They save pins for the dream house or room they are eventually going to have in their home.

The one thing about Pinterest that will help your business grow organically is creating content that people are looking for to help them create their dream homes.

Content Is a Long Term Strategy

Content is king, yes… still king. And because you’re an interior designer you will find that there is a spot waiting for you to create content that will bring you tons of free traffic to your website. Do you know why that is?

90% of interior designers (that’s my estimate based on my years in the field) hate to create content. They hate to make time for it, don’t see how it will help their business and generally leave it off their to-do list consistently.

And to that, I say if content marketing is truly worthless then why do all of the “big boys” continue to create content?

Because they know it works and brings them traffic. And that traffic is something you should be getting some of.

The even more mind-blowing thing about creating content that would steal traffic away from the big boys is that it isn’t that hard.

Yes, you have to spend the time to create it but you will find that the content that you’re looking to “beat” in the Google rankings is pretty thin. But you? You’ve got expertise and opinions that will help you create excellent content that brings you clients if you do it right.

Email Marketing Converts Prospects To Clients

Once you create content and get people to your website, your next job is to get them on your email list. If you fail to get them to sign up for your email list, your efforts in creating the content in the first place are wasted. And that is a bummer.

Why is that email list so important? Because it is your direct line of communication to your people. These are people who are interested in what you’re doing and your best chance at converting those people into customers.

It takes seven times for people to experience your brand BEFORE they hire you.

This is why you cannot bank on social media to get you the results that you can do for your own business. Your content allows you to connect with your leads. Then as you build trust you get them to join your email list. Through that email list, you then set up an autoresponder to make the bond solid between you and them.

What’s An Autoresponder?

Your autoresponder, through your email marketing service, sends out emails on a regular interval to your subscribers. Ideally, this sales funnel will educate and then lead the subscriber to a paying you for a service or digital offer.

Call To Actions On Every Page Of Your Website

Your website must have a call to action on every page. Whether it’s a button or a hyperlink, you need to tell your visitor what to do next. Having someone read your blog or look at your portfolio without telling them what to do next is like starting a conversation with someone and then abruptly stop talking.

If you did this in person, the other person would be looking at you waiting for you to finish what you were saying. When you don’t finish what you were saying, they look around and then go on about their life.

So make sure that you don’t forget this crucial step.

Budget Interior Design Could Be Your Downfall

We have all seen the design services offered for a couple of hundred dollars. Marketing to the same type of clientele isn’t a strategy to take on willy nilly. Read my post on why online interior design services suck for designers. You cannot play that game.

People who are the customers for those services don’t have enough money to sustain your business. Of course, there are ways to make passive income from that segment of the market (which means you need content!), it is not done through design services easily.

You will need to either have a lot of employees to make up the volume to go the budget interior design service way or your own independent meth problem that allows you to do projects at the speed of light until your teeth fall out and your heart explodes. It’s not sustainable and not worth it.

Know Who Your Dream Client Is

Before you can move on to the next step, you need to know exactly who your ideal client is. Without knowing exactly who you’re marketing to, you will find yourself exhausted and probably out of business in short order. You find it extremely difficult to stand out in a saturated market by trying to get the attention of everyone.

Marketing to a new mom is a vastly different job than marketing to a bachelor. Right?

Hire A Copywriter

This is crucial. Because your website is sooooo important to your business, you either need to study the art of copywriting or hire a copywriter to do it for you until you’ve mastered the art.

Copywriters are in business to help you make money with words. The words on your website matter and they need to make you money.

If you don’t have the budget to pay for a complete website copy project, then I’m going to share the pages you should get done in order of importance.

  1. Sales Page - even if the rest of your website is shit, your sales page sells your services. Because your sales page is to sell I think getting this page done first can truly help you to earn more money to reinvest in your business and hire that copywriter for the next page.

  2. Home Page - Most interior design website home pages are too vague. They usually have the basic “we believe every homeowner deserves…” verbiage OR there is just one big old photo with no text. You need to let people know what you do, who you do it for and why they need it. You cannot work with every homeowner and that shouldn’t be your goal even if you have more energy than a meth head.

  3. About Page - The most visited page on any website is your About page, and the trick here is that it isn’t really about you. It’s about your dream client. I wrote a post about how to write your About page for your interior design website without sounding like a self-absorbed jerk. Yeah, that post ruffled feathers for some because it hit too close to home.

How To Market To Get High-End Design Clients

I know for eons this has always been the modus operandi for the industry. I get it. The thing is that this just doesn’t happen without doing things differently.

High-End clients are looking for high-end services. What is it about your services that would attract a high-end client? What does your customer experience look like? What value are you adding that goes above and beyond what others in your category are offering?

Most high-end clients are leaders in their own right. That's something you will need to do some research on if you’re not in that world or never have had any experience in that realm. You’re going to need to establish your credibility, get testimonials from clients and documenting your results.

High-end clients are about exclusivity and you must make sure that every element of your marketing plan emphasizes that. Your marketing plan is going to be focused on your client walking the red carpet with you. And not just anyone is allowed to walk the red carpet, right?

Take the time to figure out if a high-end client is really the right client for you. And if you need help with this, check out my course AstroBrand Alchemy to figure this out on your own or get yourself a done-for-you Ideal Client Profile.

Network With Craftsman + Artisans

If you like other humans, then by all means network with them. Create a nice relationship with them where you share their work with your audience and vice versa.

Of course, please make sure whoever you choose to network with is an amazing artist and human. You sure as hell do not want to recommend the next scammer or jerk to anyone. That will reflect badly on you and you don’t need that shit.

Learning how to market your interior design business is a skill that you will be working on for the lifetime of your business. New platforms will come onto the market, new strategies will be tried but with any changes to the methods of reaching your clients know that your work will do most of the talking for you. So make sure you present it in the best way possible.
