How To Know That You’re a Holistic Designer + Not a Crazy Person

I used to be the designer that was convinced by the industry associations and the education system that I had to have a degree from an accredited college, pass the NCIDQ exam and then pass the CCIDC exam here in California.

Then I joined the ASID so I could add even MORE letters after my name. I used to be Alycia Wicker, NCIDQ CCIDC ASID... if only I could've also added 90210 I so would have.

I was like a lot of my peers that believed that collecting these letters was the ONLY way to prove that I was a respectable and talented designer.

The problem was that 99% of my clients didn't have a clue what any of those letters meant nor did they care and they STILL called me a decorator... which if you were me back then you were soooo offended because after you've invested all of that time and money it didn't mean shit to world.

Years later, I look back on that time and see how I got sucked into the shallowness of the industry. Today, I can say my eyes are open to how deeply important and healing interior design is.

Maybe you're not sure if you're a holistic designer or just a crazy person because guess what? There's not a guru or an industry association out there that could certify you as a holistic interior designer.

Here's how to tell that you are indeed a holistic interior designer and not a crazy person.

  1. You sense energy. Whether it's the lady in the produce section at the grocery, the man that just walked by or the last home you were inside of. You know when the energy has shifted, or it's off, and it gives you clues about the situation.

  2. Coincidences are the norm. Frequently, you think about someone, and then they call you, or some other stuff happens all the time. Your little invisible antenna just picked up on the same mental inquiry that your friend made about you in their mind and like magic! Your signals connect.

  3. You see flashes of light or things out of the corner of your eye. When you close your eyes or when you're focused on something else you'll think you see something move out of the corner of your eye. Or when you close your eyes to imagine a space, you find yourself seeing flashes or spots of light as if you had just looked into the sun.

  4. You hear sounds others don't. Sometimes you hear a small snippet of a song or a couple of people talking. You ask if someone else hears it as well and they didn't hear a damn thing.

  5. Electronics act up when you're around. You're ready to sit down and work on your project, and the computer is like "nope." Or you're trying to get your phone to open your email, or have the credit card reader take your card, or light bulbs happen to flicker around you.

  6. More frequently than you'd like to admit, you drink more than you should. Whether it's because you can't sleep or you need to shut off the noise within, you turn to the bottle a little more than you should.

  7. You see repeating numbers all the time like 11:11 on the clock or 555 on a license plate.

  8. You know what someone will say before they say it. Sometimes when this happens, you almost can't contain yourself and find yourself not listening as much as you should.

  9. You and animals are one. When you're around animals you know have a unique way with them, they love to come up to you because you know exactly where they need you to pet them.

Of course, maybe not everything you’ve read resonates with you… but the more important thing to know here is that if you take some quiet time you’ll know that you’re a holistic interior designer without having read this.

See, you're not crazy, but if you let people who don't understand tell you how they know you to be from THEIR perspective, you might be led to believe that they are right.

You must understand that the skills that you have naturally are not something that can be certified by some governing body out there. You need to claim the magic within and use it to help people who need you the most.

Think of how much good work you can do with these unique skills! We know that when we do this work, we're not only picking out the perfect lamp or creating the ideal space plan. There's so much more to it than can be quantified.

If you wait to claim your abilities or for someone to anoint you as a holistic designer you need to think of how many people are missing out on having you help them with their life here.

Your skills as a holistic interior designer make you extra special, and that's why you're going to have to go out on a limb and start working your magic.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
