Here's How To Become An Interior Decorator
So you wanna know how to become an interior decorator?
Just wanting it doesn't make it so.
There are a shit ton of people in the world who wanna do things. And they don't.
Why?
It requires action. You can't wanna be something. You need to be something.
You can sit there and mull over a million ideas in your head about how it's gonna be, the business cards you want to buy, the website you'll get designed, the services you'll offer and the list goes on. The only way you can become an interior decorator is by doing it.
Talking about it and doing it are two very different things. And the second one is a shit-ton harder.
Here's how it usually goes. Someone thinks they wanna learn how to become an interior decorator, so they go to school. Usually, they have natural talent and the school gives them so extra background information. If you're really into interiors - you'd devour anything about design on your own. You get a job working for a company and you get some real-world experience. After you get tired of working for a company, you want to start your own. Then you shit your pants because it's all too overwhelming and scary.
Or scenario two is you worked your early years as a CPA and also dreamt about the life you really wanted to live designing interiors. Except now you look at where you are in life and wonder if going back to school is the first hurdle you have to jump. You contemplate the cost of that. Then you figure you'll do that first because surely your clients will care about your education (they usually don't because they've been misinformed by HGTV anyway about what a designer or decorator really does). After you spend all that money on education, you'll set out to start your own business and shit your pants because it's all too overwhelming.
It is overwhelming and everything I know now about running a business I didn't learn in college or working for another designer. It's hard, but not impossible.
And don't get tripped up on the bullshit like - all these design websites that offer room designs for $200 or that no one comments on your Facebook page or whatever else you're wasting valuable time thinking about while you're not selling yourself.

Get clear on what problem you solve with your talents.
Then sell that solution.
Look, in case you're wondering - I don't think school is a prerequisite in all cases (unless you want to call yourself a "designer" ). Read this post on what I think it really takes to be successful.
Get to work, figure it out and make it happen.
